The data: northern Spain at the centre of the crisis

Spain's Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo), run by the Carlos III Health Institute, has sounded the alarm after recording dozens of premature deaths attributable to excess temperatures during the final days of May.

Counterintuitively, the hardest-hit regions were not in the south of the country, but along the northern Atlantic coast.

Why the north? Homes and daily routines in the Atlantic regions are simply not built to cope with extreme heat this early in the year. The historical lack of structural adaptation amplifies vulnerability invisibly. Women are also disproportionately affected because the body's thermoregulatory system becomes less efficient with age, particularly in females.

A crisis without borders

Publications including El Periódico, 65ymás, Scientific American and Capital.fr converge on a worrying diagnosis: a mass of warm air has obliterated historical records across the continent, with direct consequences for public health.

How CuidadIA responds: ANA in action during extreme heat

At CuidadIA we believe technology should adapt to people, not the other way around. We do not believe in complex devices that older adults have to learn how to use, nor in intrusive systems that make them feel watched. Faced with climate emergencies like this one, our ecosystem responds through two invisible, complementary layers.

1
ANA's proactive companionship — warmth in every call
  • Subtle hydration reminders. Because older adults gradually lose the biological sensation of thirst, ANA weaves gentle reminders into daily conversation — encouraging small sips of water, herbal tea or cold soup before dehydration sets in.
  • Attentive listening. ANA picks up on subtle shifts in speech — slower pace, slurred words, signs of confusion — which are early indicators of heat stroke, and responds accordingly.
  • Family alert protocol. If the person mentions feeling unwell due to the heat, ANA gently asks whether they would like family to be contacted, and notifies them immediately if the answer is yes. The family always receives a brief human-language note on their loved one's condition.
2
IoT layer: environmental sensors — no cameras, no recordings
  • Non-intrusive network. Behind ANA's voice, a network of discreet home sensors — placed at doors and shared spaces — understands normal daily routines without recording images or open conversations.
  • Thermal anomaly detection. During a heatwave, the system monitors indoor temperatures in real time. If dangerous levels are reached, a proactive alert is triggered well before the situation becomes a medical emergency.
  • Movement pattern analysis. If the person is spending significantly more time than usual sitting or lying down due to heat fatigue, the system detects the shift and alerts the family to act in time.

What our pilot data shows

The ANA ecosystem has been validated across four Andalusian provinces — Málaga, Cádiz, Seville and Granada — with results that speak for themselves.

94%
adherence at one month
62%
reduction in perceived loneliness within 2 weeks
74%
reduction in family anxiety
92%
remain at home autonomously

Prevention is care

The shifting climate calendar demands that we rethink how we care for older people. Heatwaves no longer wait for July — and neither can we. Through intelligent prevention, the warmth in ANA's voice and respectful, invisible home monitoring, CuidadIA shows that it is possible to give families complete peace of mind while preserving the full autonomy and dignity of those they love.

Heatwaves no longer wait for July.
Neither can we wait to protect the people we love.

Technology that embraces, not surveils.
That accompanies, not replaces. That cares, not controls.
